Elvis and Leon were going to sleep in one tent, Hoppy and Monty in the second and Pippa and Myrtle in the third. They used a fourth small tent to store all their equipment.

“We had better light a fire to keep us warm and scare away the wild animals,” said Hoppy.

“What wild animals?” cried Myrtle, “ You said there was nothing to be afraid of.”

“He’s only joking,” answered Pippa reassuringly. “ There aren’t any wild animals in the forest, except Hoppy,” she added.

“I heard that.” Snarled Hoppy.

“Right!” said Leon, “We’ll need to gather some sticks for the fire. We’ll split up into two groups. Hoppy and Monty, you go with Pippa and Myrtle.”

“I’m not going with the soppy girls,” complained Hoppy angrily.

“They need someone strong and brave to protect them,” replied Leon.

Hoppy puffed out his chest, said, “S’pose you’re right,” and off they went.

They didn’t need to go far to find plenty. Myrtle stayed close to Pippa as they gathered fallen sticks and twigs from the forest floor near the campsite.

When they all got back together again at the clearing they made a fine campfire and all sat around singing songs and telling stories. It soon got dark and only the moonlight lined the trees with its silver glow.

Elvis thought he would entertain them with one of his poems. He stood up and spoke loudly:
